(WBNG) -- Senator Kristen Gillibrand announced a new plan to help out student-parents Tuesday afternoon.
The legislation would help expand access to high-quality childcare services at no cost.
Specifically, the legislation targets student parents enrolled in community colleges or minority-serving institutions.
This comes after a federal report found many student parents struggle with funding care.
Senator Gillibrand says it is very important to help this group of people. She says they are "disproportionately without access to quality, affordable childcare."
The funding for the program would come from general spending, she says.
The senator also said she would like to see money invested into children, the "future of our country" instead of giving ax cuts to the wealthy.
