OWEGO (WBNG) -- It may only be February, but planning is well underway for Owego's Strawberry Festival.
It's a big year for the event, marking its 40th anniversary.
"Well it just started out like a little strawberry sidewalk sale. We were trying to think of a fruit that we could claim as Owego's fruit, instead of blueberries, or potatoes, or whatever. So we came up with strawberries and that's how it started," said Strawberry Festival co-chair Pat Hansen.
Now the event is a staple of the village, attracting thousands.
"Pretty soon we're closing streets and having a parade and you just keep adding. It's sort of organic, it grows and grows and grows," said Hansen.
The festival is taking place June 19 and June 20 this year. The dates are behind the inspiration for this year's theme, kicking off the summer season.
"Well it happens to be on the solstice day this year, so we're calling it Strawberry Solstice," said Hansen.
Now organizers need your help coming up with the festival's official logo.
"We get thousands of people and we just want to keep involving the community as much as we can and I think the logo contest is a way to do that," said Strawberry Festival co-chair Wendy Post.
They are currently searching for artists to submit their visions for the event.
"We really want it to embody both the 40th anniversary and the summer solstice, so it's going to be a little tricky for folks this year," said Post.
"We're looking for something that will print and will be striking on a poster or advertising, and get the word out about the festival," said Hansen.
Not only will the logo appear on all things Strawberry Festival, the winner of the contest will also receive a $100 cash prize.
If you would like to enter the contest, you have until February 28.
You can send submissions to email@example.com or visit the Historic Owego Marketplace on Facebook for more information.
