(WBNG) -- The Open Hearts Dinner is a free dinner served every Wednesday evening in Candor.
The dinner at McKendree United Methodist Church is completely funded by donations and staffed by volunteers from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Prior to the pandemic, around 170 meals were delivered to local shut-ins and served in the church dining room. In March, they switched to a drive-thru system and the number of meals provided has now gone up to 500 per week.
Because the number of meals provided has more than doubled, their food and supply need have also doubled. Along with purchasing and preparing more food each week comes a need for more refrigeration and freezer space. With this two thousand dollar grant from Upstate Shredding, the Open Hearts Dinner will put the money toward purchasing more food and supplies.
