BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Binghamton Mayor Rich David will begin his term as President of the New York State Conference of Mayors (NYSCOM) on Tuesday.

Mayor David is the 95th president of the conference.

In a news release, Mayor David said the COVID-19 pandemic shined a light on the importance of local government.

“Local government is the government closest to the people," Mayor David said. "This fact has been proven more clearly than ever over the course of the past six months, as municipal officials have been in the forefront of fighting COVID-19 and restoring economic opportunity in New York."

The mayor said his administration will push for more federal funding and state aid.

If he completes his term, Mayor David will serve as the NYCOM President until Dec. 31 2021.

David was sworn in as Binghamton mayor in January 2014. He is the city's 50th mayor.
