UPDATE: New York State Public High School Athletic Association Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas held a Zoom conference call with media members Wednesday night.
Zayas said this decision was made after speaking with nearly 500 athletic directors across the state. Zayas said it came down to their desire to provide athletes with quality seasons.
"It was going to be very difficult to provide that to student athletes right now with their only ability to practice until addition authorization is granted," said Zayas.
There will be four seasons throughout the school year.
- Low and moderate risk fall sports season (September 21)
- Winter season (November 30)
- Fall sports season II (March 1)
- Spring season (April 19)
There will be a roughly two week overlap between the fall sports season II and the spring season. Zayas said it is up to sections if athletes can participate in two seasons at once.
Despite being pushed back, fall sports season II will not have state and regional tournaments.
Windsor football coach Tim Hogan and Maine-Endwell football coach Matt Gallagher said they are glad to finally have a start date to look forward to.
"Giving us a start date where our kids know they'll be able to play football the beginning of March, that's huge for us," said Hogan.
"The unknown was tough I think for awhile, especially for the kids. I think now the kids understand, or they will that March 1 is the start date, and they have something to look forward to now," said Gallagher.
LATHAM (WBNG) -- The New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced today that high-risk fall sports will be pushed back until March 1, 2021.
High-risk sports include volleyball, competitive cheerleading and football. The revised season will be considered "Fall Sports Season II."
The decision was made this afternoon by NYSPHSAA officers.
As a result, the spring season has been moved to April 19, 2021. The original date was March 15.
Low and moderate risk sports are allowed to begin September 21. It is up to individual school districts whether or not they will participate this fall.
