HARRISBURG, Pa. (WBNG) -- The governor of Pennsylvania is calling on the state legislature to legalize the adult recreational use of cannabis.
Governor Tom Wolf along with Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman announced this week now is the time to pass legalization. One of the major reasons behind the latest push is the economic damage done by the coronavirus.
Governor Wolf says passing legalization would help bring in much needed revenue for the state.
"In the COVID-19 era, it would allow us to direct a portion of the revenue generated into programs repairing the harm done as a result of marijuana decriminilization, or the fact that we made it a criminal offense for so many years," the governor said.
Wolf says the increasing number of states who have passed legalization shows a large portion of the country supports it.
He used neighboring New Jersey as an example of states where public opinion is changing; legalization hits the ballot in the state this fall.
