Binghamton City Hall unveils its new green roof

Mayor on RoofLawn

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Binghamton Mayor Rich David unveiled the new green roof on top of City Hall Tuesday morning.

The green roof is a product of a $2.1 million project, primarily funded by a $1.6 million dollar state grant.

The roof will capture roughly 350,000 gallons of water and rain on an annual basis, which in turn will reduce strain on the joint sewage treatment plant.

Binghamton is the first municipality in Broome County to have a green roof project.

"This green roof project helped saved tax dollars," said Mayor David. "It's an investment in our municipal city hall facilities and its also very good for the environment."

12 News previously reported the cost of the project was $2.6 million. This article has been updated to reflect the accurate cost of the project, which is $2.1 million. 12 News regrets the error.
