(WBNG) -- Many students in Broome and Tioga counties can now continue to eat free through the end of the school year, all thanks to an extension of a federally-funded program.
BOCES Senior Food Services Director Mark Bordeau explained originally the free meals were only set to go until December or even earlier if there wasn't enough money.
Now, breakfast, lunches and weekend and holiday meals are guaranteed through the end of June for all public school students in the 15 districts that make up the Broome Tioga BOCES region.
Bordeau explained this move is also helpful from a logistical standpoint because managing handing out meals and collecting payment with students schedules both in-person and at home would have been difficult.
