NEW YORK (WBNG) -- The plastic bag ban that went into effect on March 1 of this year hasn't been enforced, but soon will be.
The DEC says due to a lawsuit taken to the U.S. Supreme Court, the ban on plastic bags is allowed to take effect and will be enforced starting on Monday, Oct. 19th.
The ban is in place in an effort to limit waste and pollution brought about by the use of plastic bags. The ban encourages the use of paper bags that are able to decompose naturally.
While paper bags will still be available, the DEC Commissioner said they are encouraging shoppers to bring their own bags to the stores with them and to reuse for their next trip.
