NYSPHSAA announces new start date for high risk winter sports

LATHAM, N.Y. (WBNG) -- The New York State Public High School Athletic association announced Tuesday, the start date for high-risk winter sports will be moved to Jan. 4, 2021.
High-risk winter sports include basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling.
State officials have not given high-risk sports the green light. As previously announced by NYSPHSAA, low and moderate-risk sports may begin on Monday, Nov. 30.
NYSPHSAA Executive Director Dr. Robert Sayas said that minimizing the risk and exposure to COVID-19 is a top priority.
"The NYSPHSAA membership has expressed concerns pertaining to the increase in infection rates. Minimizing risk and exposure is a top priority of the Association. We continue to make these types of decisions based upon readily available information and communication with state officials."
