(WBNG) -- Ithaca area company Rheonix has received FDA approval for a saliva test for COVID-19, an alternative to the typical nose swab.
Their testing system was first approved for use in April, but the updated approval allows the use of saliva as an accepted sample type.
The system produces same day results and is easier to handle than nasal swabs because samples can be stored at room temperature.
Senior Vice President for Scientific and Clinical Affairs says perhaps the biggest perk is that it is simply more convenient to the patient than a nasal test.
"If I'm a subject and I have the choice of either getting my brain tickled or spit into a tube it's no contest because the performance of saliva is almost indistinguishable from the swab," he said.
The new system is also a potential solution to supply chain issues connected to nasal swab tests, eliminating the need for specialized swab or collection devices.
