NEW YORK (WBNG) -- Beginning on the first of the new year a new sick leave law is in effect for those working in New York state.

Employees at most businesses can begin using paid sick days allotted to them through this new law to start accruing in September.

Governor Andrew Cuomo's office says about 1.3 million New Yorkers did not have access to paid sick leave before this new law.

The rate is one hour for every 30 hours worked.
