(WBNG) -- Tompkins County Health Officials reported that the U.K. variant of the coronavirus has been found in the county.

The Tompkins County Health Department says the positive case was uncovered through Cornell University’s COVID-19 testing lab as part of that lab’s testing services for the Cayuga Health System.

Health officials say the investigation has been completed and no close contacts have been identified. The person who tested positive for the U.K. variant quarantined after traveling and self-isolated since they were notified of the lab result, the department says.

Health experts say the U.K. variant is more contagious than the normal strain of the virus.

The first reported case of the U.K. variant was in Saratoga County on Jan. 4.
