CHENANGO COUNTY (WBNG) -- Beginning next week Chenango County will honor residents who have died from the coronavirus with the creation of a memorial.

The county office building will be draped in lights every evening with a white ribbon. Creators of the memorial say they hope it will be a symbol of light and hope at the end of a dark year.

Since Chenango County is a smaller local community, officials say the impact of the coronavirus has been even heavier.

Almost 40 county residents have lost their lives to the coronavirus, and for the second day in a row, the county announced today that two additional residents have died from the virus.

Chenango County Director of Public Facilities Julie Gates said, " A lot of people know each other, and we've all got friends and family and loved ones this has affected. Everybody's working really hard to get to work and get home and keep things moving. So, it's very important."

Organizers tell 12 News they hope the dedication will show the loved ones of victims that someone is thinking of them.
