BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- The Rumble Ponies 2021 schedule has officially been released. The season will begin May 4 and run through September 19, with 120 regular season games.
The Ponies will open the season on the road in Akron, and return to Binghamton for the home opener on May 11 to host the Altoona Curve.
The schedule format features six-game series, with every Monday as an off day.
"It's almost like we've come full circle, right? From the drama that ended the 2019 season, to not having a season in 2020 to the contraction issues, and now we're just going to focus on one thing, playing baseball," said Rumble Ponies owner John Hughes.
The Rumble Ponies will play games against:
- Akron RubberDucks (12)
- Altoona Curve (12)
- Erie Seawolves (12)
- New Hampshire Fisher Cats (18)
- Bowie Baysox (6)
- Portland Sea Dogs (24)
- Reading Fightin Phils (12)
- Richmond Flying Squirrels (12)
- Hartford Yard Goats (12)
The Ponies will not play games against the Harrisburg Senators (WSH) or the Somerset Patriots (NYY).
Hughes said it's because Binghamton, Somerset and Harrisburg are the three most centrally located teams in the division, so the league dispersed games evenly.
"Instead of playing each other, and then that would leave teams on the outskirts, really not having very many opponents is they're having us travel out to those areas regularly. Only ten homestands, the math gets complicated," he said.
A release sent by the Rumble Ponies said they expect a limited capacity crowd for the upcoming season, and season tickets and flex booklets are on sale now.
"We are actively engaged at both the county and city level...We're very encouraged that we're going to have fans out there on May 11 on opening day," said Hughes. "At what capacity, I don't know but I promise you this, it's going to be great. It's going to be a great night for baseball."
