VESTAL (WBNG) -- The Binghamton softball team is preparing for a season that consists of eight weekend series.

Binghamton finished the 2020 season at the Hampton and Norfolk State Tournament, winning two of four games before the season was canceled.

"It's kind of crazy to think that the last time we took the field was over a year ago," said assistant coach Jessica Bump.

The Bearcats return a number of upperclassmen this season, including junior Alli Richmond. Richmond is returning as a strong utility player for the Bearcats this season.

Richmond said this season she's hoping to improve her approach at the plate.

"Just taking advantage of opportunities," Richmond said. "Defensive wise just being a team player. Being versatile anywhere I'm thrown in and doing whatever is best for the team."

Binghamton opens the season with a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure on March 20 and will host the Bonnies on March 21.

The conference portion of the schedule begins the following weekend at Stony Brook.
