(WBNG) -- A local Motivational Speaker, Author, Podcaster, and Certified Transformation Coach, Carrie Verrocchio, is sharing her personal story with Lynch Syndrome, in order to raise awareness.
Lynch Syndrome Awareness Day is on March 22 every year.
Coach Carrie said Lynch Syndrome is a genetic mutation that is passed down from parent to child. In December, she found out she had inherited Lynch Syndrome.
Verrocchio said the genetic mutation makes you more prone to getting more types of cancers earlier in life, such as colon cancer, ovaraian cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer and brain cancer.
Coach Carrie said on a routine screening she received a diagnosis of colon cancer. That same disease took her brother's life a few years earlier, when he was just 48 years old.
Now Carrie is encouraging family members to discuss their medical history and look into genetic testing, in order to detect Lynch Syndrome.
Verrocchio said the genetic mutation effects 1 in 279 people, but 95% of those with it, don't know they have it.
While battling colon cancer, Coach Carrie is motivating people to focus on self-care.
