NORWICH (WBNG) -- Police in Norwich arrested one man following an incident in which a shotgun was fired Thursday around noon.

According to a news release, The Norwich Police Department charged 45-year-old Bernie J. Infante with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a class C felony.

Police said around 11:48 a.m., officers were dispatched to 75 Cortland St. for a report of a person saying that they did not feel safe and would like the police to respond.

Authorities said police contacted a neighbor who told them that the individual was armed with a shotgun and a machete. They also learned that there could be a juvenile in the apartment.

Police said a detective was attempting to negotiate with the individual when they fired the shotgun once, but not toward officers. They then attempted to escape the apartment through a closed window and officers entered the apartment, police said.

Authorities noted that Infante was stopped before he could get through the window and was then taken into custody without incident.

Police said Infante was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital and released.

Additional charges are pending and the incident remains under investigation.
