VESTAL (WBNG) -- After taking a break last year, the Vestal Youth Police Academy will resume July 20 for its ninth annual session.

The Academy is open to students in grades eight through 12 and runs through July 30. This year consists of 64 cadets from over a dozen neighboring school districts.

Cadets begin each day with physical fitness training, then go through various workshops and presentations.

They also run through interactive scenarios which include active listening, defense training, drug and alcohol prevention, first aid, and team building.

In addition to instruction by Vestal Police Department officers, the cadets are even instructed by SWAT, CSI, K9, National Guard and other trainers.
