BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Joyce DeRitis is someone who loves her job. She grew up in Binghamton and attended school at Binghamton High School.
When she was considering her next path in life, her dream was to be both a teacher and a nurse. She tells us that one specific guidance counselor suggested she could do both.
Just about 55 years later and a little shy of 90 years old, DeRitis is still at her same position with the Binghamton City School District. She tells us a lot has changed over the years, but the district has been able to accommodate her.
"It's so nice to be remembered. It's just been my salvation just being here," said DeRitis. "I appreciate the fact that the district allows me to be here."
She adds that her favorite part of the job is being able to work with the students, faculty and staff that make her life enjoyable.
If someone is going into nursing school or has just graduated, DeRitis tells 12 News that they should not rule out working in a school.
She says many want to go into a medical office or hospital, but for her, working in a school has been some of the best times in her life.
After 55 years, many people consider retiring. She tells 12 News that she has no plans on stopping anytime soon.
