Fill the Bus is an annual community-wide food drive to collect kid-friendly food items for children at risk of hunger across the Southern Tier. Fill the Bus benefits the Food Bank’s BackPack Program and other child hunger initiatives.

The BackPack Program provides children who have been identified as being at risk for experiencing hunger with a pack of nutritious, kid friendly and easy-to-prepare food over weekends and breaks during the school year. The BackPack Program operates in all 41 school districts in the Food Bank’s six-county service area.

Shoppers can purchase and donate food at Wegmans stores throughout the region, with the goal of donating enough items to fill a school bus.

Last year, shoppers donated more than 91,000 pounds of food – $130,000 – through Fill the Bus. This year’s goal is to raise 130,000 pounds.

The Fill the Bus campaign is happening until September 7. Shoppers can purchase and donate food at Wegmans in Corning, Elmira, Hornell, Ithaca and Johnson City. Pre-packed bags cost $3, $5 and $10.
