For this weeks Southern Tier Tuesdays, the M-EALS and Leadership is receiving the $2,000 grant.
M-EALS and Leadership provides food to families who are in food unstable homes in the Maine-Endwell District. The program delivers food (including fruit, milk and bagels along with non-perishable food) to between 80-100 families each week during the school year and twice during the summer.
The program partners with S&M Deli and Gerry Tull’s Store. The store provides coupons for a free gallon of milk twice a month, then it’s billed to the program. This helps in addition to purchasing fresh fruit for weekly deliveries.
Summer deliveries equate 4 weekly deliveries and include fresh vegetables from the Spartan garden. The Spartan garden is grown and cultivated by the students at Homer Brink.
All students from kindergarten to grade 12 are involved in every aspect of the food pantry program, with the exception of the confidential deliveries. Students make up much of the volunteer hours.
More information about the M-EALS Program is online. You can donate there or through the United Way of Broome County Give Site.
