Southern Tier businesses get ready for Binghamton University graduation impact

(WBNG) — Binghamton University students will graduate this weekend. That means thousands of family members and loved ones will descend on the area,  bringing an economic boost.

Hotels in the area are filling up and restaurant reservations are going fast.

"We’re pretty much sold out a year in advance," Michael Pemberton, the General Manager at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Binghamton said. "I think it’s gonna be a busy, busy, time for everyone."

"Graduation weekend is the three busiest days of our year," Kelley Wesoloski, the manager at Remlik’s said.

Binghamton University leaders estimate graduation will have an economic impact of $2.4 million in the Binghamton region, and $3.8 million across Broome and Tioga counties.

Businesses in our area are getting ready for the influx of customers.

"We have to increase staff, we have to order and prepare a lot more food than we’re used to, and just managing that many more reservations is a challenge," Wesoloski.

"We have a full array of assortments that we’re offering in the restaurant, buffet items, all kinds of bookings already for people to enjoy, dinners and what not, so we’re, it’s gonna be a busy place and all hands on deck," Pemberton added.  "I think it’s gonna be a great weekend, it’s always a great weekend for us, we look forward to it."

While it’s sure to be a busy weekend, many are excited about being part of these special moments.

"It’s nice to be able to expose them to the restaurant and they’re pleasantly surprised, and you know, and they’re just really excited and happy about what they’re going through," Wesoloski said.

Also making sure Southern Tier residents know to plan ahead.

"We try to tell our local guests it is graduation weekend, cause some people do get frustrated when we can’t accommodate what we usually are able to do," Wesoloski explained.

Wesoloski said they still have a few reservation openings for early or late in the days. She also explained at Remlik’s they offer a modified menu because the kitchen is so busy.

At the DoubleTree they are completely booked Saturday, but have some rooms available Friday.
