Binghamton Zoo welcomes new Amur Leopard

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The Binghamton Zoo is welcoming a new leopard.

Coming all the way from Indiana, the two year old leopard is only one of 200 left in captivity.

Avanti made quite the journey to join the other animals at the Binghamton Zoo.

Public relations coordinator Rachel Davenport says don’t be surprised if she doesn’t leave her indoor enclosure for her first few weeks as she is still adapting to her new environment.

She arrived at the zoo a few days ago and while for now there are no plans for her to have a mate that could change.

"Her genetics are actually overpopulated in the gene pool which means we’re just going to be a holding facility for her right now but that does not mean that in the future if the species survival program members deem her viable for her breeding then 100 percent she will breed," said Davenport.

A welcoming party will be held for Avanti at the zoo this Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
