OWEGO (WBNG) — The Belva Lockwood Inn was featured last year on HGTV’s show “House Hunters” and is set to open soon.

Inn owners Ike and Julie Lovelass have worked on bringing it to life since December 2017.

“We’ve got a lot of paint going on the walls,” said Ike Lovelass. “We’ve got wallpaper ready to put up. Putting a lot of the finishing touches that will really make this special place, special.”

The inn will feature a dining space, kitchen and bar. It also has five bedrooms and five bathrooms.

“All of the rooms will have queen-sized beds, smart TVs, so it’ll be a mix of old with new technology and updated fixtures,” said Julie Lovelass.

The inn is recognized as a historical landmark.

The inn is named after Belva Lockwood who was a head of an all-girls school on the same property in the 1800s.

Lockwood is also known for much more. “She was the first woman to ever officially run for president in 1884 and 1888,” said Julie. “Even before women could vote”.

The Lovelass’ decided to honor Lockwood in October through social media and with t-shirts.

“All of our social posts #BeLikeBelva,” said Julie. “I really think we could all, all of us regardless of political party, man or woman, whatever, that we could all be a little bit more like Belva.”

Julie says even though Belva is a part of the past, she should also be a part of the future.

“I really think it’s an important time in our country that someone like Belva Lockwood be channeled right now,” said Julie. “She was a fighter.”

The Lovelass’ are now fighting for Lockwood.

“People have really come out of the woodwork to support us and they know what an important piece of history this property is,” added Julie.
