BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — While the Chinese New Year may not technically begin until Tuesday, that didn’t stop dozens of area residents from celebrating it in style on Saturday.

Children and their families gathered at the Discovery Center in Binghamton to celebrate Chinese heritage and culture.

The highlight of the celebration was the performance of a traditional Chinese opera by Binghamton University students who are part of the Confucius Institute. Other events included the famous dragon parade complete with real fireworks, traditional New Year’s dumplings, as well as arts and crafts.

Event organizers said it’s important to learn about your neighbors so as to better understand them.

“It’s a way of sharing the culture and traditions of people who live here in the Southern Tier, and the more we know and share our customs and traditions, the more we get to know each other,” said Cheryl Dutko, the Discovery Center Director of Exhibits & Special Events.
