Detectives investigating shots fired on Binghamton’s west side, no arrests yet

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Police say two people were questioned but no charges have been filed yet after shots were fired Thursday morning on Binghamton’s west side.

Detectives say two men were fired at in the area of Belknap Avenue and Emma Street  at 10:51 a.m.

Both men were taken to the Binghamton Police Department, but no arrests have been made yet.

According to detectives, it is believed that the two men had a short argument with the person who fired shots. Detectives add this was not a random act, that the two men and shooter knew each other, and that the two men were targeted.

No injuries were reported. Streets in the area were closed and nearby railroad traffic was halted while officers investigated.

The person who detectives suspect fired the gunshots is described in a man in his 20s or 30s who was driving a black Toyota sedan. Detectives add there was a woman also in the car with the suspect.

Binghamton police and detectives were aided at the scene by Johnson City Police and detectives, New York State Police, and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

12 News caught up with one witness who shared what he saw.

“I was working on a car and then all of a sudden I heard shots fired. Three ‘POP! POP! POP!’ and I knew they were shots,” Mike Pylypciw said.

He said he didn’t hear any arguing, just the shots fired. Owning a business near the incident, we asked Pylypciw if situations like this scared him. He said, “I used to pack my lunch, but now I pack something else.”

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The Binghamton Police Department is investigating after receiving multiple 911 calls that gunshots were fired in the area of Emma Street and Lake Avenue.

Police were called to the scene around 11 a.m. Thursday.

According to Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski, two people are in custody and police are looking for the driver of a black sedan who they believe was involved.

“We’ve got two casings, so we know at least two shots were fired,” Zikuski said. “An altercation started right on this corner behind me, car drove away, couple of individuals walked up the street behind me, and the employees behind us saw a lot of this take place.”

Zikuski said there were no known injuries and weapons have not been recovered.

New York State Police, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police are assisting in the investigation.
