Town of Maine (WBNG) — Broome County is looking to make some major changes at the Greater Binghamton Airport.
The county has put out a request for proposals for a private company to manage and operate the airport.
County officials say they are exploring their options to determine the best way to attract more flights to the airport.
The Broome County Executive said airport attendance increased by 7 to 8 percent last year, a sign they are headed in the right direction.
“All the studies we’ve looked at, everything we’ve looked at says yes, there’s a demand for more service,” said Jason Garnar (D). “We need to get a company that’s going to wake up, and the first thing they think of and the last thing they think of at the end of the day is how do we get more service at the Greater Binghamton Airport.”
Garnar said the county could end up deciding the best option for them is to continue running the airport as is, but he hopes to have a final decision made by August.
He said no matter what happens, he’s focused on providing more opportunities in the future.
“Broome County is doing everything we can, more than anything it’s done before, to get more flights into the Greater Binghamton Airport. Bottom line.”
