BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Football season is right around the corner and some kids from Binghamton are already out on the field practicing.

But this week it’s not just practice for a game in front of family and friends. It’s practice for a game in front of thousands.

“We got approached about a once in a lifetime opportunity where the kids are going to have the opportunity to play at halftime,” said city of Binghamton Youth Program Director, Ryan McManus.

That’s halftime at the New York Giants preseason game this Friday at MetLife Stadium.

“They’re going to spend the first half on the sideline with the players. They’re going to be able to meet them before the game during pregame warm-up, and then they’ll do a little 10 minute exhibition scrimmage at halftime,” said McManus.

It’s an opportunity the Giants presented to our area.

“They reached out to us and they gave our kids a great opportunity to experience something they’ll probably never experience again,” said McManus.

He says the goal of the trip is not only to have fun, but to ignite a passion in the youth of our area.

“Hopefully give them a love for the game of football beyond just what we’ve done here but to see that different level that will keep them coming back throughout their school years and straight through high school,” said McManus.

All of the players participating are rising fifth and sixth graders. The trip comes at no cost to them.
