BINGHMATON (WBNG) — More than 800 students across 20 districts were taught about the dangers of distracted driving on Thursday.

Broome County Traffic and Broome County STOP-DWI hosted the sixth annual Teen Traffic Day at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

“It’s really important for us as a STOP-DWI program, as a traffic safety program to talk to the younger drivers about this because it’s the number one killer of young people, traffic crashes, and we want to reduce the number of kids killed in traffic crashes,” Chris Marion, STOP-DWI program coordinator, said.

The event began with a presentation from a traffic safety advocate whose father died in a distracted driving crash.

The day also included seat belt demonstrations and numerous simulation activities like wearing impairment goggles.
