VESTAL (WBNG) — The Vestal Elks Club paid a visit to Vestal third graders to hand out free dictionaries.
It’s part of the Dictionary Project. The project promotes literacy among third graders and helps them complete the school year as good writers.
Representatives from the Vestal Elks say these dictionaries will improve more than just reading and writing skills.
“It shows them the difference, how many quarts are in a gallon, how many pints, and the measurements of miles,” said South Central NY Elks District Deputy John Gardner. “Changes to the system to metric systems. It’s got a lot of useful information in the back of the book.”
According to the Dictionary Project, third grade is seen by educators as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn.
