Project begins to reduce flooding in Walton

WALTON (WBNG) — Work has started on a $1.2 million project designed to reduce flooding in the Town of Walton.

The soil reclamation project is eight years in the making, and will involve removing more than 50,000 yards of soil.

This will allow the water to drain into the space and away from Delaware Street, which often floods.

The project manager says the project is so important because the town floods far too often.

“So it’s not just the big storms aren’t the only things that affect us. Those small, heavy downpours affect us too and we want to minimize it. This will go a long way toward minimizing it,” said Graydon Dutcher, the Delaware County Stream Program Manager.

The crews will be working through the winter with the goal of finishing the project by next fall.

The project is funded through a variety of federal and state programs.

After the soil is removed, the space will be created into a park with a boat launch. The town hopes the newly created park will lead to an increase in economic opportunity.
