Snow storm results in several crashes on Route 17

5:31 P.M. UPDATE:

NICHOLS (WBNG) — As of 5:31 P.M., State Route 17 westbound between exits 61 and 62 are back open.


4:55 P.M. UPDATE:

APALACHIN (WBNG) — Several vehicles are off the road in Apalachin as road crews respond to many crashes around the area.

Multiple vehicles, including small cars and tractor-trailers, were off the road being attended to by first responders on Thursday evening at exit 66 (Apalachin) on State Route 17 westbound.

There is no word on what caused the crash. The highway was visibly covered by snow.


4:13 P.M. UPDATE:

VESTAL (WBNG) — Police are responding to a crash where a trailer carrying wood overturned near an on-ramp to State Route 17 eastbound.

Our crew on the scene reports there were no serious injuries at the crash on the Route 26 bridge that connects Vestal and Endicott.

Vestal police responded to the scene.

Portions of State Route 17 westbound are closed as several crashes have been reported during a snowstorm that began on Thursday afternoon.


ORIGINAL STORY:

NICHOLS (WBNG) — Traffic on State Route 17 is backing up, following a series of crashes as a snowstorm plows through the area Thursday afternoon.

The crashes happened between the exits 61 and 62 on Route 17 beginning around 3:20 p.m., according to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).

State police say Route 17 westbound is closed between the two exits after several crashes. Troopers note all the crashes had minor injuries

The Broome County Office of Emergency Services also say Route 17 westbound is closed between exits 66 (Apalachin) and 67 (Vestal/Endicott).

West traffic is being diverted from State Route 17 at the Nichols exits on to County Route 12.
