BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — As the temperature continues to drop, it becomes more and more important that you make sure your pets remain warm and safe.
The Broome County Humane Society says it’s crucial that your furry friends remain indoors as much as possible. Even if you have traditionally outdoor pets, the humane society’s shelter manager says there are certain precautions you should take to ensure your pets remain safe.
“They need to have either access to a garage or something with insulation. A doghouse is a good thing but sometimes it’s not enough. You want to make sure there’s plenty of insulation, bedding whether it’s blankets, straw,” said Amberly Ondria.
Other than keeping your pets indoors, Ondria also said you should check your pets’ water to make sure it hasn’t frozen.
In addition, even though they may look cute and can help with short-haired dog breeds, coats for animals often aren’t sufficient. Rather, invest in some boots for your furry friend, to protect them from the cold as well as the salt used on roads.
