BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The Broome Includes Special Hockey Festival weekend kicked off Friday night with a welcome party for all of the players.

At the Doubletree Hotel, 240 hockey players with developmental or physical disabilities and their families celebrated the start of a weekend full of hockey.

It was for all the teams to have fun and get to know each other before the games start on Saturday.

A silent disco let everyone dance to the songs of their choice through headphones.

“Special hockey is more than just 60 minutes on the ice. It really is about the comradery and the teams and the sportsmanship and getting together. We really are a large community,” says Jen Obrien, Executive Director of American Special Hockey Association.

Special hockey teams came from states all over the east coast, including some from Canada.

Officials say since Saturday’s event will happen inside the Floyd L Maines Veterans Memorial Arena, it will go on regardless of the weather.
