CHENANGO (WBNG) — Shoppers will soon say goodbye to another store chain in the Southern Tier.

The Kansas based company announced last week, Payless Shoesource stores are closing all of its remaining stores in the United States and Puerto Rico.

“I have lots of shoes and I always shop for shoes,” said Patty Lovuolo, of Chenango Forks. “So yeah, I’m going to miss them. They have a wide variety, the people are friendly and the convenience and the sales.”

A spokesperson for the company sent 12 News part of this statement:

“We expect all stores to remain open until at least the end of March and the majority will remain open until May. This process does not affect the Company’s franchise operations or its Latin American stores, which remain open for business as usual.”

“I think there’s just so much competition now between online and stores like DSW,” said Binghamton resident Emily Wood. “I guess I’m not totally surprised by their closing.”

Wood’s daughters say it’s a place they’ll definitely miss.

“They have deals there and it’s not as expensive and you can get a lot of shoes for a not a lot of money,” said Miley Wood.

“They always just have good styles and stuff and I’m just looking through and I’m like, ‘I want that and I want that’ and then it is just going to be a bummer because now we’re just going to have to go somewhere else that’s farther away,” said Maisy Wood, of Binghamton.

Payless Shoesource has been around since 1956. The company will also wind down its online operations.
