JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — Teachers, police officers and local elected officials took to the basketball court Thursday evening. Through the competitive atmosphere, was a community effort to raise money for those in need.
It was the 8th annual Athletes 2 Athletes Charity Faculty Basketball game. Kindergarten through 8th grade staff faced off against the high school staff.
Joining the teams were some familiar community faces, including police officers, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar as a team captain and Deputy County Executive Kevin McMannes.
Money raised through this event is going to support two Johnson City families. The Vandermark family whose son is awaiting a heart transplant, and the Taylor family whose mother has cancer.
“The whole community’s here. Like, everybody turns out. And it seems like there’s more and more people that show up every year,” says Elizabeth Akulis of Athletes 2 Athletes.
Through entry ticket sales, basket raffles and concessions, the event has raised more than $10,000 each year for the last 6 years.
Athletes 2 Athletes is a student run non-profit organization working to benefit local families.
