BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The Binghamton City School District has released a statement, saying 16-year-old Harper Stantz has died from her injuries after being struck by a car Monday.

The district says the other teen involved in the crash, 19-year-old Britney Laserinko, is in stable condition after surgery at a hospital in Syracuse.

12 News obtained court documents Wednesday, learning more about the driver of the car, 33-year-old Kevin Wilcox.

The documents say Wilcox admitted to taking suboxone, a drug that can treat pain as well as addictions to narcotics, just 30 minutes before driving.

“The officer who responded to the scene believed that the operator of the vehicle was impaired by something other than alcohol and subsequently failed his standardized field sobriety test,” said Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Griffiths.

The documents say Wilcox had “bloodshot, glossy eyes, with highly constricted pupils.” He was also listed as being lethargic with slurred speech, and unbalanced.

The Broome County District Attorney’s office says Wilcox has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him

The crash scene has been cleaned up, but tire tracks were still imprinted into the ground.

One neighbor said he wasn’t home when it happened, but looking at the scene now is a reminder of the heartbreaking and scary situation.

“The street signs were laying there in the grass, and the tree was still laying over here on its side. They had the car out of there but I’m just shocked. It’s pretty crazy to think the car came plowing through here,” said Joshua Ganskop of Binghamton.

And it’s now prompting people to think twice in their own front yards.

“I’m very concerned I don’t even want to walk on the sidewalk, it’s kind of nerve wracking to think about. There’s a park right up the road, what if it happened there? Maybe more people would have been hurt,” said Ganskop.

The DA’s office says Wilcox is in Broome Couny jail without bail.
