TOWN OF CHENANGO (WBNG) — Broome Country volunteer firefighters played hockey against Binghamton, Endicott, and the Johnson City Fire Departments in their annual “Battle of the Bravest” charity game.

Our own 12 News Meteorologist, Howard Manges coached the Binghamton team, looking to score a big win.

All proceeds from the match go toward the Retired Professional Fire Fighters Cancer Fund to benefit cancer research. Since 2010, the fund has raised and donated 268,000 dollars to cancer research across the United States.

“No occupation is more adversely affected by cancer than that of being a firefighter, so who better to support cancer research than firefighters?” said Bill Newland, President of the Retired Professional Fire Fighters Cancer Fund.

According to Newland, firefighters are very susceptible to cancer due to the toxic fumes, chemicals, and carcinogens that they have to encounter on a daily basis.

The volunteer firefighters from Broome County took home the win, with a final score of 4-2.
