VESTAL (WBNG) — Health officials say tick season has arrived in the Southern Tier and there’s plenty you can do to prevent getting a bite.

Lourdes Physician Assistant Katherine Baker says the last two weeks have brought in a significant number of patients with tick bites.

“The ticks become more active, people get more active, they’re outside, they’re doing a lot more activities, they’re cleaning their lawn up, so they have a lot more exposure to the ticks,” said Baker.

She says to prevent getting a bite you should wear long sleeves and tuck in your pants, adding, “if the ticks can’t get up into your pant legs, that really helps quite a bit.”

Also, stock up on insect repellent and check your body for ticks often.

If you find a tick, Baker says you can try and remove it at home with tweezers.

“You want to grasp really low, pull slightly.”

If the tick won’t budge, she says see a medical professional.
