TOWN OF FENTON (WBNG) — Despite some light showers, Saturday was a nice day for volunteers at Chenango Valley State Park and across New York State to take part in a day of cleaning and celebration.
It’s all part of I Love My Park Day, a statewide initiative to clean up the parks in time for spring, and encourage more people to get involved with local parks.
Park staff say volunteers are needed all year long to help maintain everything, but the need has been even greater recently with the crazy weather.
“Especially after that storm we just had, the potential tornado if you will,” said Randy Smith, who has worked at the park for 34 years and is currently its maintenance supervisor. “I don’t know what it was but it knocked down a bunch of trees and we’ll take all the help we can get.”
Besides cleaning up the park, the event encouraged people to enjoy everything Chenango Valley State Park has to offer.
Saturday was also family fishing day at the state park, where youngsters were able to experience both the highs and lows that come with the activity.
