BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The First Ward Action Council is on a mission to makeover Crandall Street, and give it a more positive reputation.

“It’s basically a situation where some of the worst housing in Binghamton, a lot of criminal activity, I mean a lot of bad things on Crandall Street,” said First Ward Action Council Executive Director Jerry Willard.

For the past year and a half, the non-profit has been trying to make a difference.

“I just knew it was a bad area, but I didn’t know much about it. I heard about it a lot on the news, but it seems to be changing,” said Carmen Cartagela, who lives on Crandall Street.

Now, it’s filled with ten brand new homes, in addition to another house on North Street, providing 37 new apartments for people to live in.

“It’s so much different. It’s amazing. It’s like a whole new neighborhood. It’s fantastic,” said Crandall Street resident Eileen Williams.

Many of the units are still open for tenants to move in, but some people who have already moved in have nothing bad to say.

“I don’t have any complaints,” said one resident. “I love it. It’s quiet. It’s brand new. It’s clean.”

The First Ward Action Council says the project cost about $10 million and the funding came from various sources including the city of Binghamton, the Broome County Land Bank, and state programs.

The group now hopes others in the area will follow in its footsteps.

“We hope not only we have changed Crandall, but this encourages other people to spend money on the neighborhood on their housing,” said Willard.

And the goal is not only to make a better street, but a better Binghamton.

“We want to see positive changes in the city and this is part of it,” said Willard.

The First Ward Action Council is hosting an open house where you have the chance to tour these homes on Thursday, June 6. It will run from 12-6 p.m.
