BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Members of the New York state Assembly and Senate are holding a hearing in Buffalo focused on the transit needs facing western New York.
The hearing scheduled for Friday afternoon at Buffalo City Hall is the latest of several such gatherings around the state as lawmakers debate the best ways to increase funding for transit systems.
While New York City’s subways are considered the biggest challenge, lawmakers say they want to find ways to help boost public transportation throughout New York.
Friday’s hearing comes just two weeks before lawmakers plan to pass a new state budget. Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called for new tolls on motorists entering Manhattan as a way to encourage more commuters to use transit while also raising badly needed revenue for subway repairs and upgrades.
