UTICA (CNN) — A Utica man won $5 million on a scratch off ticket.
49-year-old Michael Shepard won the prize weeks ago, but claimed the money Wednesday.
“I put it in a safe at my friend’s house and then I waited because I wanted to get some advice first and stuff,” Shepard explained.
Lottery officials presented Shepard with a check for just over $3.5 million. He bought the $20 ticket at a grocery store.
Shepard says he plans to “be smart” with his winnings.
He’s the 20th player this year to claim a prize worth more than a million dollars in New York’s lottery.
