Peebles store in Norwich closing next month

NORWICH (WBNG) — Many Chenango County residents are sad to see one of the area’s longtime department stores close soon.

Doors will close for Peebles in Norwich January 19. This also includes Peebles store locations in Troy, Canandaigua, and Brockport.

Sara Stewart of Norwich, a regular shopper, is upset to see the store go.

“Because we don’t have a good variety of stores in Norwich,” said Stewart. “If something comes up spare of the moment or you need something, you know, this is always a great store. It has everything.”

Stage Stores is the department store company that owns Peebles and a number of other stores, including Bealls and Goody’s.

A company representative denied 12 News’ request for an interview and instead sent this statement:

“Peebles has enjoyed being part of the Norwich community since 2008. Unfortunately, we had to make the tough decision to close the Norwich store in efforts to further strengthen our company. We hope our Norwich customers will come visit us at our nearby Peebles in Sidney. If they cannot make it to Sidney, they can always shop 24/7 at”.

“I was surprised it was closing,” said Alicia Woodard of Norwich. “I had no idea and then all of a sudden they’re like oh it’s fifty percent off, it’s sixty percent off, it’s closing and we were like what?”

Peebles in Norwich currently has eight employees.

The company says it’ll help all of its employees in the Norwich store and others across the state with job placement in the company or finding a new job.

“I’ve bought Christmas presents for my sons and my sons-in-law and my daughters and it’s really… I’m sad because I really it like here,” said Helen Capaccio of Norwich. “It’s a nice store.”

Fourteen other Peebles stores in New York will remain open.
