BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Ivory Christmas on Gorgeous Washington Street kicks off the holiday season in downtown Binghamton.

The street turns into a winter wonderland, made up of mostly people, and pianos.

“Ivory Christmas is an opportunity for the businesses on Gorgeous Washington Street to come out and celebrate Christmas and invite their customers to come on down and show off what we have,” said Director of Economic Development for the City of Binghamton Robert Murphy.

Murphy says planning the event started a while back.

“It’s over the last couple of months, and now crunching it down to the last couple weeks,” said Murphy.

Most of the preparations is bringing shop owners together, and decorating the street.

But Murphy says that’s made easy, thanks to the support of the city.

“We have a team of people. It’s great having the support of the mayor’s office as far as, just basically they came in today and Mayor David got us the cleanup crew coming down to downtown Binghamton and getting the decorations up, and the trees are up now,” said Murphy.

But one of the most unique parts of the event to organize, is the pianos that are scattered along Washington Street.

“It kind of brings life to downtown Binghamton, doing it outside in winter time, you might see that in some places down south, in like Savannah you’ll see that on the street in the warm weather. We decided to take it up a notch and do it out in the winter time,” said Murphy.

One musician spent his Wednesday focused on just that.

“I’m just going to try and get these in tune. They’re cold, there’s cold air getting in, they’re going to get moved around, they’re going to be outside. So my strategy is just try to get them in the neighborhood of where they need to be and then if I have the luxury of some free time I’ll try to give them a little touch-up outside,” said musician John Kanazawich.

Musicians will play on pianos throughout the night, but if one empties up and you know how to play, you’re welcome to hop on.

The event kicks off Thursday at 5 p.m. and goes until 7:30 p.m.

It also takes place Friday at 5 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m.
