(WBNG) — A DICK’S Sporting Goods Open volunteer has been named the PGA Champion’s Tour Volunteer of the Year, and tournament staff say the award couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person.
Chris Chechatka has been a volunteer for the tournament for the majority of his life, boasting more than 40 years of experience. He leads the team of volunteers that clean up En-Joie Golf Course after the concert.
Chechatka said he was truly touched to receive this award.
“It is so humbling. It brought back a lot of emotions from when I was a weaker man and certainly made me realize how blessed I am,” Chechatka said.
Chechatka was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer last November, and says it has been an emotional year for him and his family. His condition has improved, and he was able to fully participate in this past summer’s event.
The DICK’S Sporting Goods Open is a PGA Champion’s Tour major and lasts for six days every August.
This year, the players of the Champion’s Tour named the DSGO their favorite event of the year.
