ORIGINAL STORY:

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV/AP) — Fire officials say all three children inside a Herkimer home are presumed dead after a fire early Friday.

The Herkimer fire chief tells WKTV that two adults awakened by smoke detectors tried to get to the three young boys in the home on East Steele Street, but were unsuccessful. The adults exited the home and then attempted to go back in, but weren’t able to reach the children.

The remains of a one-year-old child have been found. The fire chief said crews continue their search for six and seven-year-old children, who are presumed dead.

Investigators have not said what caused the fire.
