BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Lawmakers are weighing in on Sen. Schumer’s announcement that an industrial hemp facility in the Binghamton area will create hundreds of jobs and put the Southern Tier at the forefront of a “newly-unleashed and growing industry.”
New York State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D) released the following statement:
“I’ve been working for the last several years to develop industrial hemp into a new agricultural commodity,” said Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Chair of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture. “I’ve always thought the growing, processing, manufacturing, and research of this crop would have enormous potential for the Southern Tier and the entire state. This level of investment from Canopy proves that industrial hemp can in fact be a major economic driver for our region.”
New York State Senator Fred Akshar (R) released the following statement:
“Industrial hemp presents a new economic opportunity for our Upstate communities, and I’m encouraged by Sen. Schumer’s initial announcement. However, with so few details on this project available, I’m eager to learn more before passing judgement. Part of that judgment will be how this new industry will effect the already struggling dairy industry. My first priority is to ensure our dairy farmers aren’t taken advantage of or forgotten in New York’s agricultural landscape.”
U.S. Congressman Anthony Brindisi (D) released the following statement:
“This exciting investment will not only create hundreds of good-paying jobs, it also puts the Southern Tier at the forefront of a brand-new industry. This is exactly the innovative, forward-thinking action we need to grow our economy and create opportunity for people in the Southern Tier. Thank you to Senator Schumer for leading on this important issue.”
