BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Four-legged police K9s in the area just got an upgrade in how they train.

A local Eagle Scout had the idea to make major improvements for the dogs and local police agencies.

“I had a dog so of course I went with the dog theme, made an obstacle course for the K9 unit after reaching out to a couple of different people if they would want an obstacle course and they beat everybody else to the punch,” said Nathan Denney, an Eagle Scout.

He didn’t do all of it on his own.

“I had 32 volunteers helping me,” he said. “Most of them from my venturing crew which is an off branch of Boy Scouts.”

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office agreed to get the ball rolling. From there, it was easy to jump into action.

“To have people come and want to help our K9 program, help out just us in general is far and few between and for him to do that was awesome,” said Deputy Michael Kelly.

This project benefits agencies like Vestal, Johnson City and Binghamton which have K9s that train together.

“This is the perfect opportunity for us to work on our dogs agility jumping over walls, jumping over windows, just putting them in environments where they normally get to train with,” explained Kelly.

Kelly is grateful to be able to use this new course with his four-legged pal.

“It was a lot of work on Nathan’s part and to watch it start at the beginning and to see where it’s at now to me is pretty extraordinary for a 15-year-old and I’m pretty proud of him for that,” Kelly added.

“It’s something he’s been shooting for since he was in the first grade,” added Nathan’s mother Renee Denney. “He was an honor guard for an Eagle ceremony and wanted to be an Eagle Scout ever since. So getting to see him put his dream into a reality is amazing as his mom.”

Deputies say the older course was falling apart. This course will be a major improvement especially since it’s winter.

The K9s will be training indoors.
